Stop the Anti-Gay Bullying, Continued, Sadly.

Wear purple clothes tomorrow.

Normally, I don’t give fashion advice, and I’m not the type that does the wear this to advocate for that, but I’ll make an exception.

Wear purple clothing, like this shirt tomorrow, in allegiance with LGBT youth.

It’s Ally Week, a time to advocate for LGBT kids, some of whom have been committing suicide because of anti-gay bullying.  Tomorrow, Oct. 20, we’re all urged to wear purple in solidarity with LGBT kids and show them that we won’t tolerate bullying.

In a dispiriting video I found on the JoeMyGod blog, somebody filmed a high school football game in which the kids chant: “Powder blue faggots! over and over again at the opposing team. It’s just crushing if you imagine a gay kid sitting silently in the stands listening to that.  Over and over again. Endlessly. No wonder gay teens are killing themselves left and right.

Another awful thing about the video is whoever took the video shows some of the comments she got for posting another version of the video. The comments said basically that yelling that phrase is all in fun, that it’s too PC to criticize it.

So I guess it’s OK to basically kill gay teenagers with words, if it helps you win a two-bit football game, right?

And words DO kill.

Here’s the vid:

DENIS!!! look around. I am wearing purple now. For whatever reason, at different points kids called me gay in school, although I am not. Every single one of those ignorant redneck bullies should be humiliated in some unfair way, daily, just so they can understand the power of their hateful words.
