Chilled sunset

I took these sunset photos from my house last evening. People like bright sunsets, and so do I, but sometimes the moody ones like this are the best.

Some dark clouds laden with snow were coming in from the northeast. As the sun set near the southwestern horizon, it shone through the falling snow in the atmosphere, creating a gauzy, gold glow. The light reflected off the shiny ice on frozen Lake Champlain.

I liked the conflict in the photos: The warm light of the sun fighting with the dead cold of the bare limbs, the ice and snow, and the gathering darkness.

As I took the photos, a cold north wind made the bleak, skeletal trees groan and creak. I shivered, turned off the camera, went inside and made a hearty, hot soup.
